Northeast India offers some of the most stunning and diverse landscapes in the country. Starting from Guwahati, the gateway to this region, travelers can embark on road trips that reveal lush hills, vibrant cultures, and hidden gems. These journeys combine adventure with cultural experiences, making them perfect for those who want to explore beyond the usual tourist spots.

Winding through lush, green hills, the road from Guwahati offers breathtaking views and serene landscapes, perfect for exploring the enchanting beauty of Northeast India.

One of the most popular road trips from Guwahati is the drive to Kaziranga National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is about 220 kilometers away and takes roughly 4 to 5 hours by car. The park is famous for its population of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, along with elephants, tigers, and a variety of bird species.

The route itself is scenic, passing through tea gardens and small villages. Visitors can enjoy jeep safaris inside the park, which offer a chance to see wildlife up close. The best time to visit is between November and April when the weather is pleasant and the park is open for safaris.

Tawang is a remote town in Arunachal Pradesh, about 480 kilometers from Guwahati. The journey takes around 12 to 14 hours, depending on road conditions, but the views make it worthwhile. The route climbs through the Himalayas, offering breathtaking mountain vistas, rivers, and waterfalls.

Tawang is known for its ancient monastery, one of the largest in India, and its rich Tibetan Buddhist culture. Travelers should prepare for winding roads and higher altitudes. It’s best to start early in the morning and plan overnight stops in towns like Dirang or Bomdila.

A shorter and equally rewarding trip is the drive from Guwahati to Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, about 100 kilometers away. Shillong is often called the “Scotland of the East” due to its rolling hills and cool climate. The city offers a mix of colonial architecture, lively markets, and cafes.

From Shillong, travelers can continue to Cherrapunji, around 60 kilometers further. Cherrapunji holds records for some of the highest rainfall in the world and features spectacular waterfalls, caves, and living root bridges. The roads between these destinations are well-maintained, making it a comfortable trip for families and solo travelers alike.

  • Vehicle choice: A sturdy SUV or a vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended, especially for mountainous routes like Tawang.

  • Permits: Some areas, particularly in Arunachal Pradesh, require special permits for travelers. Check local regulations before starting your trip.

  • Weather: The region experiences heavy monsoon rains, so plan your trip during the dry season to avoid roadblocks and landslides.

  • Local cuisine: Don’t miss trying local dishes such as Assamese thali, Khasi pork, or Arunachali momos along the way.

  • Accommodation: Book stays in advance during peak tourist seasons, especially in popular spots like Kaziranga and Shillong.
