Ancient kingdoms, living traditions, and landscapes shaped by the Brahmaputra come together in a region that feels worlds apart from the rest of India. A self-drive car from Guwahati is the best way to explore these destinations on your own schedule, pausing wherever curiosity pulls you.
Kamakhya Temple, Guwahati
Perched on Nilachal Hill overlooking the Brahmaputra, Kamakhya is one of the oldest and most revered Shakti Peethas in India. The temple complex includes several smaller shrines surrounded by forested hillside. Visit early in the morning to avoid crowds and catch the sunrise over the river. The drive up the hill road from the city centre takes about 20 minutes, and parking is available near the temple gate.
Majuli Island (350 km, 7–8 hours)
Majuli is the world's largest inhabited river island, sitting in the middle of the Brahmaputra. The island is the cradle of Assamese neo-Vaishnavite culture, home to centuries-old satras (monasteries) where monks preserve traditional dance, music, and mask-making. Drive from Guwahati to Jorhat, then take the ferry from Nimati Ghat. The journey is long but deeply rewarding — plan at least two nights on the island. An Innova or similar comfortable vehicle handles the highway stretch well, and the island's internal roads are best navigated by local transport or bicycle.
Sivasagar and the Ahom Legacy (370 km, 6–7 hours)
Sivasagar served as the capital of the Ahom dynasty for over 600 years. The town is dotted with remarkable ruins: the Rang Ghar (Asia's oldest amphitheatre), Talatal Ghar (a multi-storeyed palace with underground escape tunnels), and the Sivadol temple complex on the banks of the Sivasagar tank. The NH-37 highway from Guwahati is well-maintained, making this an excellent day-two destination if you combine it with a Kaziranga visit.
Tea Gardens of Upper Assam
Assam produces more tea than any other region in India. The tea estates around Jorhat, Dibrugarh, and Kaziranga offer guided tours where you can watch plucking, processing, and tasting first-hand. Several heritage bungalows on working plantations accept overnight guests, giving you a glimpse of colonial-era tea culture. Driving through the endless green rows of tea bushes with the Eastern Himalayas on the horizon is a quintessential Assam experience.
